Scalp care
Caring for a scalp you cannot always see
The basics of keeping a scalp comfortable when most of it is covered: how to reach it, what to use, and what to avoid.
How do I reach my scalp under a weave, braids, or locs?
The Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother has four long, curved prongs shaped to slide beneath weave tracks and between braid parts so you can reach the skin without disturbing the style. Use it to massage the scalp, to work a treatment in evenly, and to loosen buildup. See the Scalp Soother.
Why does my scalp itch under a protective style?
Product, oil, and skin cells collect between washes and sit against the skin, which is what usually causes the itching and discomfort. Itch Relief is formulated with Salicylic Acid to gently exfoliate that buildup, with peppermint, menthol, tea tree, and grapefruit oils to cool and soothe. Read the full label.
How do I use Itch Relief?
Tilt your head back and apply it directly to the scalp between braids or weave tracks, or to exposed areas. Do not squeeze the bottle vigorously. Gently massage it in with the Scalp Soother to help loosen buildup, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, then style as usual. No rinse is required, and for best results it can be used as needed.
Is there anyone who should not use it?
Itch Relief is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs. Do not use it on a broken or irritated scalp, stop if irritation develops, and keep it out of reach of children.
Can I use the Scalp Soother on natural hair, or without extensions?
Yes. It was designed for protective styles, but it works the same on any scalp: the prongs part the hair so your fingers are not fighting the style to get to the skin. It can also be used to massage the scalp and during shampooing.
Does using the tool damage my style or my edges?
The prongs are rounded and shaped to reach beneath the style rather than pull at it. Use gentle pressure at the hairline and along the part, and never use sharp objects to scratch an itch under a style.
Protective styles
Braids, weaves, wigs, and locs
Answers for the styles themselves, including hairlines, lace fronts, and the itch that shows up in week three.
Which protective styles is this made for?
Weaves, braids, hair extensions, and protective styles of every kind, including wigs and locs. If the style covers your scalp, the routine underneath still has to happen.
How do I care for a lace front or hairline?
Apply Itch Relief at the hairline and between tracks, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, then work it in gently with the prongs. Because there is no rinse, the lace and baby hairs stay exactly where you put them. Shop Itch Relief.
What keeps a style feeling heavy by week three?
Buildup. Rinse out cleanly, then keep the scalp moisturized between washes with a no-rinse mist. The Rice Water Leave-In Conditioner hydrates, detangles, and adds shine without touching the base of the style.
Can I use the Scalp Soother while shampooing?
Yes. Working it through shampoo helps lift buildup off the scalp instead of leaving it on the surface of the hair, and most people find it feels better than scrubbing with the fingertips.
The 3-step maintenance system
Prep, moisturize, condition
What is in the system, the order to use it in, and how Itch Relief fits alongside it.
What is in the 3-Step Maintenance System?
Three bottles: the Scalp Antiseptic to prep and cleanse, the Rice Water Leave-In Conditioner to moisturize, and the Revitalizing Conditioner to condition. The system is sold as one set at $45.99.
What order do I use them in?
Prep first with the Scalp Antiseptic, then moisturize as you go with the Rice Water Leave-In Conditioner, then condition with the Revitalizing Conditioner. Prep, moisturize, condition. Then do your thing.
Where does Itch Relief fit in the routine?
After the scalp is clean. Apply Itch Relief to the scalp between braids or tracks, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, and do not rinse. It is the in-between step that keeps an itch from coming back between wash days. Shop Itch Relief.
Can I buy the three bottles separately?
Yes. Each bottle is listed on its own in the shop, so you can restock one without buying the set. The set is the way most people start.
Do I need all three if I only wear protective styles sometimes?
The system is a starting routine rather than a requirement. If your scalp tends to itch or feel heavy, the Scalp Antiseptic and Itch Relief are the two most people reach for first.
